I continue what looks like my end-of-the-year John Carpenter man crush, which started with the reviews of Lost Themes (2015) and Christine (1983), with this awesome book highlighting the work of photographer Kim Gottlieb-Walker. For a fan like me, poring over this treasure trove of pics from the sets of Carpenter’s Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980), Escape from New York (1981), Halloween II (1981), and Christine is essentially like having been there as part of the crew. And Gottlieb-Walker’s often candid snapshots – some accompanied by recollections from Carpenter, Gottlieb-Walker, cinematographer Dean Cundey, actor Keith Gordon, and many others – pretty much illustrate what an experience it must’ve been to make these low-budget horror/sci-fi movies with a small team and little money. Just a bunch of people who loved films and wanted to make their own.
